Now’s the time to get into VR – but be realistic about its returns, says Palmer Luckey
A lot can happen in five years, especially in a tech field as fast-moving as virtual reality. For Oculus VR, it started with an 18-year-old Palmer Luckey making headset prototypes in his parents’ house. Then came more duct-taped prototypes, some serious evangelizing from prominent tech figures like John Carmack, a multi-million-dollar Kickstarter campaign, a grassroots VR developer movement (that continues today), and a $2 billion Facebook buyout.
Oculus VR is the company responsible for kicking off enthusiasm for a whole new generation of VR – today’s VR tech has the support of not only a growing and engaged VR development community, but also companies with the resources and business interest to push VR in the mainstream, eventually.
Report- PlayStation 4 has outsold Xbox One by over 40% worldwide
It's been clear for some time that Microsoft has lagged behind Sony when it comes to sales of modern consoles. However, it's been difficult to pin down the exact difference due to the paucity of public sales data. The best we've been able to do is report that, as of April, Sony had sold at least 7 million PlayStation 4 consoles through to consumers while Microsoft had sold just 5 million Xbox Ones to retailers. Today, Ars Technica took a stab at shedding more light on the topic in an interesting report that estimates Microsoft has sold no more than 7.5 million Xbox Ones worldwide since September, while Sony has sold at least a bit more than 10 million PlayStation 4 units
Tablet game revenue to triple by 2019, report finds
Research firm Juniper Research has put together a report that suggests revenues from tablet games to jump from $3.6 billion this year to $13.3 billion in 2019. The factors that will influence this growth include "improved storage capacity of devices, better graphical capabilities, increasing mobile broadband penetration and consumers' preference for convenience and ubiquity," Juniper says. The firm suggests that over the next year, independent developers will be further squeezed in the app store markets and need to raise more funds to compete for "consumer awareness," something we're already seeing in blog after blog after blog. Notably, Juniper pre…

Riding the rails to GDC- A Q&A with Train Jam conductor Adriel Wallick
We're just weeks away from GDC 2016, and a group of developers who want to ride the rails from Chicago to California in time to attend the March conference in San Francisco — and make a game along the way — have signed on to do so as part of the third annual Train Jam game jam.
The brainchild of indie developer Adriel Wallick, Train Jam has become a valuable place for developers to collaborate in close proximity with the promise (and the pressure) of knowing their work will be part of a unique showcase on the GDC show floor the following week.
This year the third annual Train Jam will once again last a little over two days and take place entirely within an Amtrak train. Participants have from when the trai…
NetEase hires veteran Call of Duty designer to lead new triple-A studio
NetEase has brought in veteran Call of Duty design director David Vonderhaar to lead new remote-first studio BulletFarm.
The fledgling studio will be headquartered in Los Angeles and has been tasked with developing a new triple-A franchise.
Vonderhaar spent almost two decades at Treyarch and Activision Blizzard before leaving in August 2023. During his time at the studio, he worked on eight entries in the Call of Duty series and served as a leader within the design team.
Discussing his decision to join NetEase and BulletFarm, Vonderhaar said the project would push him to step outside of his comfort zone and try his hand at making something completely new.
