Tooth And Tail Review

Tooth and Tail is a bizarre cocktail of a dozen great ideas. It’s a minimalist RTS that tosses out complex tech trees in favor of action-packed but accessible play. It’s set vaguely in Eastern Europe in the 1910s, with both the Russian Revolution and World War I in full swing. Playing up the grim tumult of the era, Tooth and Tail also casts itself with all manner of cute–though ragged and crestfallen–critters. With so many disparate items, it’s a wonder that Tooth and Tail manages to work at all, but it excels with but a few minor blemishes.

Superficially, Tooth and Tail looks the part of a standard RTS, but familiarity with genre staples isn’t required. Yes, you still have resources and units, and a “base,” of sorts, but the similarities end there. Instead…

Reigns- Game Of Thrones Review- A Westerosi Romp

After nearly a decade, the end of the Game of Thrones TV show is in sight. Fortunately, fans of the series have new things to look forward to, but even for those with faith in George RR Martin, the prospect of a new Song of Ice and Fire novel looks increasingly unlikely. Similarly, what the future holds for video game adaptations of the franchise is unclear. Telltale is all but dead, and for a series that has proven to be such a phenomenal success in other mediums, it’s surprising that there haven’t been more game adaptations. Reigns: Game of Thrones may not be the Elder Scrolls-style RPG you’re hoping for, but it does nonetheless offer a welcome use of the license–even if it does occasionally stumble with repetition.

Reigns: GoT has you take on the r…

Naruto Shippuden- Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Review

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 is a game that knows its audience. Picking up where its predecessor left off, it tells the ongoing tale of young ninja Naruto Uzumaki’s struggles as the Nine-Tails’ jinchuriki and his complex relationship with Sasuke Uchiha. It also covers the five kage summit and the outbreak of the fourth great ninja war.

No Man's Sky Next Review- You Are Not Alone

Nothing about the hype, release, disappointment, and slow, disciplined redemption of No Man’s Sky has been typical. As such, the great paradox of the Next update isn’t exactly a surprise. It introduces some drastic improvements to the base game, not to mention a great deal of what Hello Games’ Sean Murray promised and was pilloried for not delivering at launch. It is a grander, more cohesive experience that makes the infinite expanse of space feel much less lonely. But what Next really ends up emphasizing through all of its quality-of-life improvements and additions was that the game we got on day one was always going to be “the game.”

You start out as an amnesiac astronaut stranded on a random planet with a broken ship that, once repaired, takes you on a potentially nev…

The Order- 1886 Review

The Order: 1886 is a torturer and a tease. It promises you a circuitous story populated with near-immortal knights, it promises you exciting encounters with snarling werewolves, it promises you clever weaponry the likes of which you rarely see in video games. It dangles these hopes in front of you and then yanks them away, reneging on one promise after another, letting you hold that precious toy in your hand and then denying you the chance to maintain the thrill. The Order is cruel in the way it plays with your expectations, taking a promising premise and then sucking out much of the energy with boring cutscenes, an ending wholly devoid of closure, and shooting-gallery action sequences.

“Boring” is the best word to describe The Order in general, actually. That …

Soft Body Review

Soft Body is a playable kaleidoscope, an ever-changing symphony of motion, color, and sound. It’s a mixture of different genres, combining the best aspects of bullet hell games, puzzle games, and Snake to create a challenging and mesmerizing experience.

You control two snakes that either move in unison or independently, dependent on the given level. The control inputs typically only require the left and right analog sticks. Using them, you guide snakes around a geometric landscape filled with angular enemies that emit waves of projectiles. You have to complete a collection of small objectives in order to beat each level, which usually involves moving a small ball or circular object around a maze, “painting” borders by touching or merely coming close enough to them,…
