Monochroma Review
The term “corporate overlord” is usually used in jest. We recognize how much power these inhuman entities have over us, but we’ve yet to reach the point where our waking hours are dictated by their whims. In Monochroma, we see a vision of a city in which this term has reached its terrifying potential. The fear of losing your freedom is palpable, communicated through the emptiness of the cityscape, the bleakness of the visual design, and the unceasing rain washing away any semblance of hope. It’s unfortunate, then, that the plight of one boy striving to break free of this citywide prison–filled with puzzling barriers–is overshadowed by something as mundane as technical failings. Monochroma conjures frustration instead of empathy, undermining the intriguing premise set in the early goin…
Ring Fit Adventure Review- One Year Later
Editor’s note: Ring Fit Adventure first released on October 18, 2019. Because we were unable to review the game back then, we’re taking this opportunity–the one-year anniversary of its release–to give it a full evaluation now. In this review, Jenae Sitzes reflects on a full year of on-and-off workouts with Nintendo Switch’s premier fitness game.
Over the past decade-plus, Nintendo has established itself as the home for fitness games. Wii Fit and its enhanced version, Wii Fit Plus, have together sold over 43 million copies worldwide, so it was only a matter of time before the company attempted to replicate that success on Nintendo Switch. Fortunately, Wii Fit’s successor is far more ambitious than many people may have anticipated. Rel…
The Banner Saga 2 Review
The Banner Saga 2 begins at “Chapter 8” and ends just as its engrossing plot begins to reach a tipping point. It feels like the central portion of an epic novel, torn straight from the binding. It’s a game that looks and feels practically identical to its predecessor released two years prior, but the attractiveness of its presentation–inspired by 1960’s Disney-style animation–and the refined combat system still stand strong, giving it an air of timelessness. The Banner Saga 2 presents a grand mythological odyssey and effectively conveys the hardships of the characters enduring it.
However, this is not the ideal point to enter the series. The Banner Saga 2’s mechanics, its layers of consequential decision-making, strategic management, and tactical turn-based c…
Sushi Striker- The Way Of Sushido Review – Cartoon Cuisine Combat
Like many of Nintendo’s most memorable video games, Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido takes a seemingly mundane fixture of life and extrapolates it into a novel gameplay idea. In this case, co-developer Indieszero (Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, NES Remix) has built an action-puzzle game around conveyor-belt sushi, which serves as a vehicle for its match-three-style duels. And thanks to a knowingly zany presentation and regular stream of new mechanics, Sushi Striker is a fun and consuming puzzler unlike anything else currently on Switch, despite a few niggling issues.
Battling foes by throwing plates of sushi is an inherently silly premise, and Sushi Striker fully embraces the concept by wrapping it up in an even more ridiculous story. The game begins in the aftermath of the…
NBA 2K23 Review- Like Mike
I’ve never envied the development cycle that comes with working on an annual sports game series. When you consider how much time and money goes into any other big-budget project, asking a studio to constantly churn out a game that is both functional and consistent but also fresh and exciting every single year seems unfair. NBA 2K23 is incredibly impressive regardless, but even moreso in light of this tight dev cycle. With a deep suite of fun game modes, improved on-court gameplay, and a deeper social experience, it feels like the team at Visual Concepts managed to freeze time and spend longer than the typical cycle on this exceptional NBA sim.
It’s hard to know where to begin with NBA 2K23 because, in ways both big and small, there’s a lot of new stuff to see. …
How Pacific Drive Pulls Off Being Unnervingly Spooky And Relaxingly Chill All At Once
I’m not very far into the Olympic Exclusion Zone in a run of Pacific Drive when the rain picks up. A T-shaped intersection looms just ahead, and as I make a right turn, the headlights play over the wreckage of a truck at the base of a hill, surrounded by trees. I bring the station wagon to a stop but leave it running and hop out, hustling over to the rusting hulk. Trucks are great finds, almost always full of junk I can use to upgrade my car or the garage that acts as my base of operations, and thus, always worth checking.
As I’m rifling through the menu that shows everything found within the truck, I hear it–some kind of high-pitched, siren-like sound coming from the woods behind me–and I freeze. My shoulders are tight and after a few seconds, I start to fra…
Steep Review
Mountains are far from uncommon in open-world exploration games, but even in the most impressive ones, they’re normally little more than pretty white fences encircling a greener playfield. Steep reverses this concept with some success. Here, it’s the valleys and green spots of the world that trigger the invisible walls and the mighty Alps that fill its rocky, snowy sandbox. Steep’s gameplay unfortunately falls short of matching the grandeur of its open world, but it’s a tough act to follow.
Steep lets you seamlessly zip down mountain ranges via snowboards, skis, wingsuits, or paragliders with a quick click of a radial menu. At any time, you can leap from below the treeline to miles-high “drop points” you’ve discovered–either by walking or taking a helicopter–and partak…
Rare Replay Review
There are few game developers as beloved as Rare. Its creations have charmed millions over the last 30 years with witty writing and an attention to detail that lends credence to goofy, fantastical worlds. It’s found success in a wide range of genres, and Rare Replay, a collection of thirty games from the studios’ distant and recent past, showcases this success perfectly. It has offbeat side-scrolling beat-em-ups, racing games, a fighting game, first-person shooters, games starring piñatas, and even one about a foul-mouthed squirrel who makes his debut under the fog of a massive hangover. Rare Replay isn’t a “best of” collection, as some of its games are better regarded as historical touchstones rather than timeless hits, but there’s plenty to enjoy, and even learn, if you’re willing to…
Mad Max- Fury Road's Fleet Of War Rigs Are Up For Auction
If your Toyota Corolla or Ford Explorer are boring you, get your wallets out. A veritable fleet of much cooler cars will soon be up for auction by Lloyds: the iconic vehicles of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
On September 26, Lloyds Auctions will make 13 cars from the cult-classic film available for bidding. This includes the War Rig that Max, Furiosa, and the Wives were escaping in, the Doof Wagon that kept the guitar-playing mutant suspended in front of a wall of speakers, and Nux’s sand-battered rustbucket. Most importantly, perhaps, Max’s 1973 XB Falcon Coupe, better known in the movies as the Interceptor, is in the lot as well. Check out an excerpt from the lot’s description:
“Recently salvaged along with the full-life Max, the XB Interceptor has been resurrecte…
